Consider These Goals For Your Space In 2021
2021 is all about goals and new beginnings. If you’ve been putting off giving your home an update, it’s about time to establish some goals for the new year.
Looking forward to the new year we want to embrace this opportunity to cleanse, declutter, and organize our home and office. Here are some ways to get inspired for a new year and better organization.
1 – Make the Year More Zen
The year of 2021 will be all about zen and calm. After a year in turmoil, more people are seeking a serenity in their environment than ever. Sorting through then either donating them or throwing them away. This should include old items from your closet, decor, kitchenware, and other unused items. Perform this task in each area individually. This will help you isolate areas, making the overall project seem more manageable.
2 – Invest in Organizing Unused Areas
Look for those empty areas under beds, on the back of doors, and even up on walls. Finding those hidden and unused areas can be an excellent way of creating and managing many of your storage needs.
Some great items to look for are over-door hanging organizers, under-bed boxes, super low rolling carts, modular storage, wicker boxes and crates. Moving seasonal, or lesser used items to these areas can really free up space for more commonly utilized items, or a more minimal or zen look.
Use little containers to separate smaller items in kids spaces to keep drawers organized longer.
PRO ORGANIZING TIP #97
Once you do organize things in these hidden areas, be sure to make a note of it. Until you are accustomed to going under your bed for something it might skip your mind that it’s there, sending you on a wild goose chase.
3 – Upcycle Outdated Larger Items
We have a little time on our hands for projects, and upcycling is a great way to stretch your dollars further, while creating a fun activity. With a few google searches and a little creativity you can upcycle most large non-electronic items. Many people find the process of reviving outdated items as therapeutic as they breathe life into a forgotten item.
A few hours and a little money can go a long way, but be real about your abilities. Sometimes selling or donating an item is really the best course of action.
4 – Find Eco-Friendly Solutions
The environment is at the forefront of any solution in 2021. This year we are sure to see trends in this department, and rightfully so. With so many choices and the perfect amount of rustic, more people are choosing a rustic vibe that does wonders for the environment. Adding some reclaimed wood shelves, or choosing eco-friendly finishes, you can ensure that you are staying true to your personal mission.
Some great materials to keep an eye out for include: jute, bamboo, hemp, reclaimed wood, recycled steel, mud silk, and concrete to name a few.
5 – Add Plants or Outdoor Accents Inside
Not only does plant life help to cleanse the air we breathe, but also helps to cleanse our soul as well. Ever growing demands on our lives increased stress and decreases interactions in nature. Adding a plant indoor can help remedy this unbalance. With a succulent, pocket herb, or easy to care for indoor plant variety, you can help your mental state and add a colorful piece of decor to any home. Some plants that need little or no effort to grow include snake plants, peace lily, lucky bamboo, mother-in-law’s tongue, and air plants.
Make sure your plant fits your space and receives enough sunlight and water.

6 – Create a Focal Point
Minimalism and zen-like atmospheres are focused environments. Creating a focal point in a room will help you create a focus of that space around that item. If a room is a multi function room, creating stations can help you to create focus in different areas for their assigned tasks. Focal points don’t have to be oversized. They can be a small area with a bold design, bright color, or visual statement.
This year especially it’s going to be easy to have big dreams, so be sure to make your goals manageable, and remember to take the time to find quality pieces that add to your life.
Check yourself at the end of each quarter to see if you are on track. Don’t bury yourself in the details, but do consider how you want to tackle your goals and decide which order they should be done in and how you would measure that. Holding yourself accountable will be entirely up to you. And during the year, as your life changes, some of your design goals may as well. Suddenly needing a new nursery, in-law suite, for instance, might throw a wrench into your spokes.
